Thrukon is a 2500 mile sub-arctic glacial survey on two motorcycles through sections of British Columbia, Yukon Territory and Alaska. The survey team hopes to observe and document important glaciers along the route north, while attempting to capture the spirit of exploration. The general approach for the trip will be part travel documentary and part research survey, which will involve riding motorcycles equipped with the necessary gear for field research, camping and video/photo documentation; as well as limited spares for any unforeseen events. This blog is the repository for all of the information gathered in preparation for and during the journey.

Test Ride / KTM 990 Adventure

It was a long wait to get some saddle time on the 990. Luckily a local dealer had a demo available. This one is a used 2010 with about 24K on it.

When comparing bikes for this trip, I'm mainly looking at the following: Most importantly is reliability (as I really don't "want" to be doing roadside repairs in the middle of the Yukon), weight (everything we take will need to fit on the bikes), fuel capacity and MPG (for obvious reasons).

The 990 feels good and handles well. Lots of torque to whip your head back when you get on the throttle and the suspension is excellent. I wasn't able to test it off road, but I'm really not questioning KTMs ability to produce dirt capable products.
