About Me

Thrukon is a 2500 mile sub-arctic glacial survey on two motorcycles through sections of British Columbia, Yukon Territory and Alaska. The survey team hopes to observe and document important glaciers along the route north, while attempting to capture the spirit of exploration. The general approach for the trip will be part travel documentary and part research survey, which will involve riding motorcycles equipped with the necessary gear for field research, camping and video/photo documentation; as well as limited spares for any unforeseen events. This blog is the repository for all of the information gathered in preparation for and during the journey.

First Upgrade

As the world of upgrades go, bolt on components are a quick and easy way to make some decent moto-modifications. I decided to take the entry level approach and install a new exhaust pipe. Most manufacturers claim that a bolt on exhaust will help you gain additional horsepower and increase torque while lowering the over-all weight of the bike. My main goal with this mod was to simply reduce weight and add a little more "oomph!" and excitement to the overall experience.
After a review of the possible matches for the F800GS, I decided on this...

Two Brothers Racing  Black Series V.A.L.E.™ Slip-on Exhaust System - M-2 Carbon Fiber Canister

In addition to being made of carbon fiber, this slip-on tip also boasts...

» Black Teflon coated cast magnesium end caps
» Black Teflon coated billet aluminum inlets and outlets
» Black Teflon coated canister reinforcement bands
» Special Black anodized 7075 T-6 aluminum bolts that are the button-down on top of the refined Black Series.

Aluminum and Titanium are also available in this line.

Decision made, I was able to talk an old friend and owner of Ride The Lightning Moto (RTL), Sean Fader, into helping me procure and install the TB M-2 carbon tip. We did the swap at the RTL garage, which specializes in Moto Guzzi repairs, rebuilds and restorations. Everything went smoothly and we only had to modify the bolt hanger for the canister strap, as the pannier rack caused the exhaust can to angle down slightly, which is a common issue with the TB M-2 and the BMW F800GS stock pannier rack.

Over all it came out quite nice.
