About Me

Thrukon is a 2500 mile sub-arctic glacial survey on two motorcycles through sections of British Columbia, Yukon Territory and Alaska. The survey team hopes to observe and document important glaciers along the route north, while attempting to capture the spirit of exploration. The general approach for the trip will be part travel documentary and part research survey, which will involve riding motorcycles equipped with the necessary gear for field research, camping and video/photo documentation; as well as limited spares for any unforeseen events. This blog is the repository for all of the information gathered in preparation for and during the journey.

MSF Test

In preparation for riding a motorcycle from Seattle to Anchorage, I thought it might be a good idea to acquire a motorcycle license.

Back in early December I attended the class required to bypass the Department of Motor Vehicles test and attain the M1 motorcycle license. While the license is ultimately needed for the journey, it's immediate purpose is to allow further testing of the bikes we are researching.

I opted to take the class instead of challenging the DMV test simply because the class provides the bike and certificate called a DL-389, which tells the DMV I don't need to take their silly riding test. Sadly though, it's been about twenty days and the DL-389 has not yet arrived in the mail.

Below is a video still from the final day of driving practice and testing. I have no idea if filming was allowed, but I snuck the GoPro in my pocket to capture some footage for the documentary.
